National Girl Child Day observed by India Post, felicitated girls by opening Sukanya Samriddhi account in Varanasi

India is celebrating the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and girls have a significance importance in our country. Girls are the future of tomorrow. There is need to strengthen them financially and socially for their bright future. 'Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana' launched under 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' is playing an important role in this. These thoughts were expressed by Mr. Krishna Kumar Yadav,  Postmaster General, Varanasi Region in a program organized to celebrate 'National Girl Child Day' in Varanasi Cantt Head Post Office. He also distributed Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana passbooks to girl child beneficiaries and felicitated them. Mr. Yadav told that 2.32 lakh girls have been opened Sukanya Samriddhi accounts in Varanasi Region so far, while 520 villages have been made Sampoorna Sukanya Samriddhi Grams by covering all eligible girl child in these villages.

Postmaster General Mr. Krishna Kumar Yadav said that the family, society and ultimately the nation becomes strong by the empowerment of the girl child. Now the Aadhaar card of girls up to 5 years of age can be made through the Postal Department at doorstep. Under the 'My Stamp' service, stamps with girls picture can be made and given to them. Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, which is opened in the Post Office for the girl child up to 10 years with only ₹ 250, is not only a medium of investment, but it is also linked to the bright and prosperous future of the girl child. The economic as well as social dimensions of this scheme are important. The amount deposited in this will be completely for the girl child, which will be useful in her education, career and marriage. This scheme will also promote women empowerment in future by empowering the girl child. He also appealed to the people to take a new initiative by opening Sukanya Samriddhi account for the girl child of poor and deprived family.


Assistant Director (Postal Services) Mr. Ram Milan informed about the importance of celebrating National Girl Child Day. Mr. Sanjay Kumar Verma, Superintendent of Post Office, Varanasi West Division, said that the interest rate in Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana is 7.6 percent and there is also income tax exemption on the amount deposited and the interest earned. A maximum of 1.5 lakh rupees can be deposited in this scheme in a financial year. Up to 50 percent of the deposit amount can be withdrawn after the girl child attains the age of 18 years or has passed class 10th. The maturity period of the account is 21 years from the date of opening of the account, however it can be closed at the time of marriage after the girl child attains the age of 18 years.

On this occasion, Superintendent Post Office Sanjay Kumar Verma, Assistant Director Ram Milan, Assistant Superintendent of Posts RK Chauhan, Postal Inspector Shrikant Pal, Postmaster RS Verma, Sriprakash Gupta, Rajendra Yadav, Abhilasha Gupta, Ajita Kumari etc. were present for the encouragement of the girl child.
