Department of Posts is celebrating 'Sukanya Samriddhi Mahotsav' in 75 cities/towns across the country to commemorate the success of Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana on the occasion of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, from 15 September to 11 October. Mahotsav in Varanasi was inaugurated by Dr. Neelkanth Tiwari, former minister and MLA, in a ceremony organized under the chairmanship of Postmaster General, Shri Krishna Kumar Yadav and in the august presence of Padma Shri Dr. Rajinikanth. During Mahotsav, Sukanya Samriddhi Accounts of girls up to 10 years of age were opened to provide them financial security and passbook along with gift hampers was distributed to them. Girl beneficiaries were also wished for their bright future and success in life. More than 1,000 girls have applied for opening of SSA. Moreover, while spreading financial literacy and making public aware about the savings schemes of Post office and India Post Payments Bank, accounts under various schemes were also opened to cover the masses under financial inclusion.
As the chief guest, former minister and MLA Dr. Neelkanth Tiwari said that Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has always given priority to women in social welfare schemes. Through various Central Government schemes like toilets as a part of Swachha Bharat Abhiyan, Ujjwala, Jan Dhan Account, Skill development, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, women have been empowered and benifited as well. In this sequence, for empowerment of the girl child under 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' scheme, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana has been introduced to ensure financial independence for higher education, career and marriage of girls in future. Appreciating the efforts of Department of Posts, he said that the way girls child are being covered under this scheme by running door-to-door campaign, it is commendable and shows the commitment of the department towards financial inclusion & social obligation.
On this occasion, Postmaster General Shri Krishna Kumar Yadav said that Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana is playing an important role in the empowerment of the girl child. So far, SSA accounts of 2.60 lakh girls have been opened in the Post offices of Varanasi region, while 755 villages have been made Sampoorna Sukanya Samriddhi Grams by covering each and every eligible girl child residing in that village.
Padma Shree Dr. Rajinikanth said that, now the Post Offices are not only dealing with delivery of letters and Money orders to the people, but also catering all the welfare schemes of the government to citizens and delivering its benefits up to the last mile. If girls become self-reliant through Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, then the concept of 'Self-reliant India' will also be realized.
Senior Superintendent of Post offices, Rajan Rao said that Sukanya Samriddhi account can be opened in any post office for girls child up to 10 years of age in just Rs.250. In this scheme, maximum of 1.5 lakh can be deposited in a year which draws an attractive interest at the rate of 7.6 percent per annum.
On this occasion Senior Superintendent of Post offices, Rajan Rao, Senior Postmaster C.S. Barua, India Post Payments Bank Sr. Manager Sublesh Singh, Assistant Superintendent of Post offices SK Chaudhary, Dilip Yadav, Inspector Posts, Sarvesh Singh, Ramesh Yadav, Shrikant Pal, V.N. Dwivedi, Ram Ratan Pandey, Sri Prakash Gupta, Jagdish Sadeja, Bhupendra Kumar, Vivek Kumar, Deepmani Tiwari, Kamal Bharti along with Postal officials, public representatives and girls child with their parents were present.
