Special Cover and Pictorial cancellation issued on Rajasthan's State tree Khejri at Jodhpur Philatelic Exhibition


A Special Cover on Rajasthan's State tree - Khejri was released at inaugural function of the Jodhpur Philatelic Exhibition JODHAPEX-2015  on 7th December 2015, by Mrs. Sheuli Berman, Postmaster General, Western Region, Jodhpur and  Mr. Krishna Kumar Yadav, Director Postal Service, Rajasthan Western Region, Jodhpur and other dignitaries in dais.

On this occasion  pictorial cancellation on state tree of Rajasthan Khejri was also issued. Director Mr. Krishna Kumar Yadav said that Khejri, the desert tree as it is also known was the lifeline of the people in Western Rajasthan in the earlier times. It provided firewood and even acted as a cash crop. Khejri covers about two-thirds of the total geographical area of the State and is of immense significance culturally and economically.


 Khejri or Loong tree or Prosopis cineraria is a species of flowering tree in the pea family, Fabaceae. It is native to arid portions of Western Asia and the Indian Subcontinent, including Afghanistan, Iran, India, Oman, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Other common names include Jund, Kandi, Banni / Shami or Sami, Vanni, Jammi, Khejra, Khijdo etc. It is the state tree of Rajasthan and Telangana States. It is also the national tree of the United Arab Emirates. 

On this Special cover, Rajasthan state tree Khejri found in desert has been depicted whereas Special cancellation depicts logo of Khejri. Total 1,000 Special covers has been published at the price of Rs. 5/- each. This cover will be made available in different Philatelic bureaus of India, said Mr. Yadav.
